Teil 1 · Was das Unternehmen wert ist

Übersicht

Insulet makes the Omnipod, a small, tubeless, waterproof pod that sticks to the skin and delivers insulin automatically for people with diabetes, replacing syringes or tethered pumps. A companion app or handheld controller lets the wearer and, for its automated version, an algorithm adjust dosing in real time. Each pod is disposable and worn for about three days before being replaced, so a single prescription generates a recurring stream of pod purchases rather than a one-time equipment sale.

Wie das Geld verdient wird

Revenue comes almost entirely from selling pods, priced per unit and billed through pharmacies, wholesalers or directly to patients depending on the market. Because pods are consumed continuously rather than bought once, revenue grows with the installed base of active users, not just with new prescriptions — a patient who starts on Omnipod tends to keep buying pods for years. Gross margins are high once manufacturing scales, since the underlying hardware and adhesive are inexpensive relative to the price charged.

Umsatz nach Segment

US Omnipod70.9%

Pod sales to patients in the United States, sold mainly through pharmacies and increasingly billed like a prescription drug rather than durable medical equipment.

International Omnipod27.9%

Pod sales outside the US across more than 20 countries, growing faster than the US as reimbursement and awareness expand.

Drug Delivery1.3%

A small, shrinking legacy business supplying Insulet's pod technology to pharmaceutical partners for delivering non-insulin drugs.

Wettbewerbsvorteil

Wechselkosten · Schmal

Patients, caregivers and endocrinologists build years of familiarity with Omnipod's app, alarms and refill routine, and insurance formularies lock in a specific device once approved. Switching to a competing pump means a new prescription, new training and a new payer authorization, which discourages moves — but rivals like Medtronic and Tandem offer similar convenience, so the advantage is real but not decisive.

Was die Nachfrage antreibt

Defensiv

Demand is driven by the growing, chronic population of people with type 1 and insulin-requiring type 2 diabetes, a need that does not disappear in a downturn. Growth also depends on how quickly insurers agree to cover Omnipod and on the pace at which patients switch from injections or rival pumps, both of which move independently of the broader economy.

Wichtigste Risiken

  • Single-product dependence — Virtually all of Insulet's revenue comes from one product platform, Omnipod. A safety recall, a manufacturing disruption or a technological leap by a competitor would hit the whole company at once, with no other product line to fall back on.
  • Reimbursement and coverage risk — Sales depend on private insurers, Medicaid and Medicare agreeing to cover Omnipod, and coverage terms vary by payer and geography. A shift to less favorable coverage or slower Medicare adoption would slow growth or cut realized prices.
  • Manufacturing concentration — Pods are produced at a small number of manufacturing sites. A quality problem, natural disaster or supply disruption at one of them could interrupt the ability to fill prescriptions worldwide.
  • Competition from other pumps and therapies — Medtronic, Tandem and other insulin pump makers compete for the same patients, and advances in oral or injectable diabetes drugs could reduce reliance on pumps altogether over time.

Kundenkonzentration

Insulet sells through many pharmacies, wholesalers and distributors rather than to a few large accounts, and does not disclose reliance on any single customer for a material share of revenue.

Die Argumente dafür

Buyers argue that Omnipod's tubeless, disposable design keeps winning converts from injections and competing pumps, that recurring pod sales create a durable, growing revenue base, and that international expansion and pharmacy-channel access still have years of runway.

Die Argumente dagegen

Sellers fear that dependence on a single product platform leaves little room for error, that reimbursement decisions outside the company's control can move pricing and volumes, and that competitors could eventually match Omnipod's convenience at a lower cost.
