Teil 1 · Was das Unternehmen wert ist
Übersicht
Woolworths Holdings is a South African retailer selling premium food, fashion, beauty and homeware, mainly through its own Woolworths-branded stores in South Africa and neighbouring countries. It also owns Country Road Group, a separate fashion business in Australia and New Zealand built around brands such as Country Road and Witchery. The company sold its Australian department store chain, David Jones, in 2023 to focus on these two remaining businesses.
Wie das Geld verdient wird
Revenue comes from selling food and general merchandise through owned stores and store-in-store concessions, at prices set higher than mass-market rivals in exchange for a promise of quality and design. Food is the largest single contributor, generating about two-thirds of group revenue, with the fashion, beauty and home business and the separate Country Road Group in Australia making up most of the rest. A financial services arm and a small logistics operation add further revenue.
Was die Nachfrage antreibt
Mäßig zyklischThe food business is fairly resilient, since groceries are a recurring purchase, while the fashion, beauty and home business and Country Road Group are more exposed to discretionary spending that shrinks when consumer confidence weakens. The company itself cited constrained consumer discretionary spending and subdued confidence in both South Africa and Australia as headwinds in its FY2025 results, and Country Road Group posted an operating loss for the year.
Die Argumente dafür
Buyers argue that the Woolworths Food business carries a premium reputation for quality that keeps customers loyal even at higher prices, and that selling David Jones let management refocus capital and attention on the two businesses that still make money.
Die Argumente dagegen
Sellers fear that Country Road Group's operating loss and weak comparable sales show a fashion business still struggling in a tough Australian consumer environment, and that the fashion, beauty and home division at home depends on discretionary spending that a South African consumer under pressure may keep cutting back.
