La maggior parte dei ricavi arriva da una piccola commissione applicata a ogni contratto scambiato e compensato, quindi i ricavi salgono con il volume di scambi più che con la direzione dei prezzi — un mercato volatile fa bene a CME anche se i prezzi scendono. Un secondo flusso arriva dalla vendita dei dati di mercato a operatori, banche e fornitori di dati, più il reddito sul collaterale in contanti che i clienti depositano a garanzia delle operazioni.
